4. Installation Guidelines

Proper installation is critical because Schedule 40 is a “tight-fit” system designed for solvent welding.

1. Cutting: Cut the pipe square using a fine-tooth saw or a plastic pipe cutter.³ A crooked cut reduces the bonding area.

2. Deburring: Use a knife or deburring tool to remove the “burrs” (small plastic shavings) from the inside and outside of the cut. This ensures the pipe seats fully in the fitting.

3. Dry Fit: Insert the pipe into the fitting without glue. It should go in about 1/3 to 2/3 of the way easily before becoming tight.

4. Cleaning & Priming: Clean the pipe end and fitting socket with a rag. Apply a PVC Primer (usually purple) to soften the surfaces for a better chemical bond.

5. Solvent Cementing: Apply a thin, even layer of heavy-duty PVC solvent cement to both the pipe and the fitting.

6. Joining: Push the pipe into the fitting with a 1/4 turn to spread the glue, and hold it firmly for 30 seconds.

7. Curing: Wait at least 24 hours before pressure testing the system.
