What is upvc Reducing Bush 3×2″ ?

A UPVC (unplasticized polyvinyl chloride) reducing bush is a type of plumbing fitting used to connect pipes of different diameters. The “3×2 inch” designation specifies that it reduces a 3-inch pipe size down to a 2-inch pipe size. The “GM” likely refers to a specific brand or manufacturer, while “Sch 40” (Schedule 40) refers to the fitting’s wall thickness and pressure rating.

Specifications and Details

Material: Manufacturers create the fitting from UPVC, a rigid and durable plastic that resists corrosion, chemicals, and abrasion. They often use it for cold water supply and various industrial applications.

Schedule 40: This indicates the wall thickness of the fitting. In the world of PVC and UPVC piping, “schedule” is a standard that defines a pipe’s wall thickness, which in turn determines its pressure rating. Schedule 40 is a common standard for pressure applications, suitable for handling a maximum working pressure of around 15 bar (or approximately 217 PSI) at a temperature of 20°C (68°F). It has excellent tensile and impact strength.

Size: The 3×2 inch size specifies the nominal bore (internal diameter) of the pipes it connects. The larger end fits a 3-inch pipe, and the smaller end fits a 2-inch pipe.

Usage and Installation

A reducing bush resembles a reducing coupling, but it fits inside a larger fitting instead of connecting two pipes directly. It features both a male and a female end, enabling you to glue it into a larger fitting, like a tee or elbow, to reduce the connection size. This makes it a great space-saver. The installation process typically involves a solvent cement (or glue).

  1. Prepare the pipes: Ensure the ends of the pipes are cut squarely and are free of burrs or dirt.
  2. Apply solvent cement: Apply a layer of solvent cement to both the outside of the pipe and the inside of the fitting.
  3. Join the parts: Immediately and without twisting, insert the pipe fully into the fitting’s socket until it reaches the internal shoulder. A slight rotation (about a quarter turn) can help to spread the cement evenly.
  4. Allow to cure: The fitting will set quickly, but it’s essential to allow sufficient time for it to cure before putting the system under pressure. The manufacturer’s instructions should be followed for exact setting and curing times, but a general guideline is to set in 15 minutes and use after 24 hours.
