What is PPR Pipe 25mm ?
A 25mm Q-therm PN 20 PPR (Polypropylene Random Copolymer) pipe is a specific type of plastic plumbing pipe designed for both hot and cold water systems. It’s often used as an alternative to traditional metal pipes due to its specific properties. The “Q-therm” indicates the brand, “25mm” is the outer diameter, and “PN 20” refers to its pressure rating.
Here are the key details and specifications:
- Material and Construction: Manufacturers create “Q-therm” products from Polypropylene Random Copolymer (PP-R), a non-toxic plastic material. They often use state-of-the-art German technology to ensure these products provide a safe, hygienic, and eco-friendly option for potable water.
- Pressure Rating (PN 20): The PN (Nominal Pressure) rating of 20 indicates the pipe can withstand a maximum continuous working pressure of 20 bars (2.0 MPa) at a temperature of 20°C. For hot water applications, the maximum sustained working temperature is typically around 70°C, with a maximum transient temperature of up to 95°C. As the temperature increases, the pressure rating decreases, which is why hot water systems require a higher PN rating.
- Size (25mm): This refers to the pipe’s outer diameter. The internal diameter is smaller, usually around 18mm, with a wall thickness of approximately 3.5mm, depending on the manufacturer’s specific standards (SDR, or Standard Dimension Ratio).
- Usage:
- Hot and cold potable water supply systems.
- Central heating systems.
- Chilled water networks in air conditioning systems.
- Underfloor heating systems.
- Transporting various chemicals in industrial applications.
- Installation: Installers typically use a process called thermo fusion (or poly fusion) welding to join PPR pipes. This involves using a specialized welding machine to heat the ends of the pipe and fittings to a specified temperature (usually around 260°C). Skilled technicians quickly join the heated parts together, creating a permanent, leak-proof, and homogenous connection.
